Rear Admiral Thomas Q. Donaldson, V, USN (Ret.) serves as the center director of NASA John C. Stennis Space Center (SSC) in south Mississippi where all Space Shuttle Main Engines are tested and proven flight-worthy. Admiral Donaldson is responsible for coordinating all of NASA’s rocket propulsion test capabilities, Earth Science Application programs as well as managing SSC. SSC is a unique federal and commercial city that is home to more than 30 federal, state, academic and private organizations and numerous technology-based companies.

Prior to becoming center director in January 2004, Admiral Donaldson served as the Commander of the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command headquartered at SSC. This worldwide organization provides oceanographic, meteorological and mapping services to naval forces around the globe. He was selected for Rear Admiral (lower half) in February 2000 and took command of the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command in November 2000. In April 2001, he was designated Hydrographer of the Navy by the Chief of Naval Operations, representing the United States’ naval interests internationally. Admiral Donaldson retired from the United States Navy in December 2003.

He began his career in the United States Navy as a Midshipman in 1971 and was commissioned in 1975 at the U.S. Naval Academy. His subsequent assignments included tours in engineering, operations, personnel and leadership positions. His career involved a unique blend of service on ships, submarines and in aircraft.

Admiral Donaldson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography from the U.S. Naval Academy. He also holds Masters of Science degrees in Physical Oceanography and Meteorology from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a Master of Science degree in National Strategic Studies from the National War College.

He is married to his high school sweetheart, Debbie, and they are blessed with three wonderful children.
